Father, husband, teacher, all around nerd,Wannabe stoic philosopher, and oh yeah a photography guy
I’ve been around photography since the early 1990s. My roommate in college was a photographer so I would go on shoot with him from time to time, go to shows, and hang out in the photo lab. He was my photographer for my gig with the student news paper as well. In fact all my main friends on college were photographers except me. Huh go figure.
When I became a dad I was my sons coach for little league and active as a scout leader when he was in Boy Scouts. But as he trasitioned to high school I couldn’t find a way to be involved to the level I liked, and I could not just sit in the stands to wait for the band to play, or for him to wrestle, or for him to be up to bat or make a play. I had to find a way to be actively involved. So my wife suggested I get a camera and take some pictures of him while he did his thing. Yeah I’m not sure if she regrets that idea, but her we are.
From taking pics of my kid, it went to taking pics of his friends, to being the band/team photographer, to kids asking me to do their senior pictures. At the same time, I started taking pictures at events for the school I worked at. Later I became the school photographer. My wife teachers yearbook so I occasionally take pictures for her.
Beyond the school photography, I got into urban exploration and for about ten year documented abandoned buildings in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. I’ve shot travel images in fun places like New York City, Dublin, Ireland, and even the happiest place on Earth, Walt Disney World. And along the way I’ve shot a few weddings and have done portrait and event work.
After Eighteen years behind the camera it has come down to two things that I love about photography, the feeling I get when I completely nail a shot and more important the connection I make with my subjects. For me it really is more about the latter than the former. I like to work with people I like and can have fun with. If we are not having fun then it becomes a job and really this is more to me than just something I do to make money for concerts and camping.
So if this sounds like good to you and you are willing to put up with a middle aged nerd with an odd sense of humor, then sign up for a session or lets work together on a project. Most of all lets have some fun.
